Lost In Japan by Shawn Mendes

One of today’s pop songs that I could appreciate today.. Before you come at me, don’t get me wrong, I absolutely find the beat and lyrics of the songs endearing. It’s catchy and not corny like most of the other pop songs out there I find.. However, while I noticed that while some pop songs do acknowledge the asian culture, there has still yet to be more real asian representation in music. I find that artists have a liking towards alluding to and referring to asian cultures, I suppose because the exotic image often associated with asian culture, but very rarely are asians actually physically involved or have a central/ active role in the messages of the songs. Other artists that I find engaging in this practice are rappers like Nicki Minaj’s “Chun-Li”, singer Chris Brown’s “Fine China”, etc. Instead, the idea of the asian cultures just simply adds to their art, much rather than appreciating or showing any genuine interest in asian culture, for a lack of a better word. Guess it just kinda rubs me in the wrong as someone identifies as asian herself. Clearly this is just food for thought and something I began to take notice on and been a little too wrapped in I guess.. Nonetheless, I try to enjoy the song for what it is and let the song speak for itself. Hope ya’ll enjoy this song and hope ya’ll do so as well. Feel free to purchase down below.
