When I first heard about Ms. Holiday, I was in a jazz studies class, MUS 393. The class examined the history and roots of jazz and was the first class where I slowly learned how cool jazz was. It’s been close to two years and I have only grown to love it as my music taste has expanded. Thanks to jazz, my commitment to music has only strengthened. This is for Mr. Ray Briggs for teaching MUS 393 Jazz- An American Music and of course, the one and only Ms. Billie Holiday.
“If I’m going to sing like someone else, then I don’t need to sing at all.” – Billie Holiday
♫ Southern trees bear strange fruit
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees ♫
